FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the purpose of your research?
We are interested in learning more about what life is like across the US. In particular, we research how communities change over time. We're interested in learning directly from people about their education, work histories, neighborhoods, and communities. You have a unique story, and we want to hear it!
What is a research interview?
Research interviews are conversations between participants (you!) and members of our research team that typically last around 2 hours. During the interview, we ask you simple, straightforward questions about your community, neighborhood, and life in general.
What if I don’t have anything to say?
Everyone has something to say! Even so, the interviewer will guide you through the process. There are no right or wrong answers. You can skip any questions you do not want to answer. Our study participants usually find the interview process easy and even fun!
Why do interviews?
Interviews provide us with more in-depth information than a survey. In an interview, you can tell us more about what is important to you, your family, and your neighbors.
What if I’m too busy to do an interview?
We work around your schedule. We understand that many of our participants work in the daytime and have other responsibilities. Let us know your preferred day and time, and we will make it happen (including weekends and evenings). If you don’t have two hours, we’d still love to talk to you. If you have children, reach out to us to inquire about childcare possibilities.
Where will we do the interview?
We can conduct the interview anywhere convenient and comfortable for you. For most people, this is in their home. Others prefer to meet us at a library or another quiet public place.
How will I get paid?
We provide payment through cash at the end of the interview. We can also use an electronic payment method, but most people opt for cash.
How will you protect my information?
All of the information you provide will be kept confidential. We remove all identifying information from the interview transcript and store it on a secure server. We will never share or sell your personal information. Visit homewoodirb.jhu.edu or contact us to learn more about how Johns Hopkins University and The Community Study protect your data.
